Welcome

Hi everyone! Welcome to ECH 277. I would like you to briefly introduce yourself to the group and then find an object or digital image that represents who you are or why you are interested in early childhood, or early language and literacy.  Post a description of the object on the discussion board and explain why you chose that particular object. Attach a digital image of your object: photo, scanned image or web-linked image. Please include in your post a brief description of your expectations for the class.

  1. Hello, my name is Helene Kabasu. I'm interested in Early Language and Literacy because I want to learn all the necessary information to better myself, and be able to plan appropriate lessons that will benefits the children. My expectation for this class is to be able to walk away with everything that I need to know about this course, be able to use what I learn in the near teaching future, and of course to pass the course with a good grade.
{I had a hard time uploading an image to this blog} But the image that I tried uploading is an image of a cup of tea. The reason why is that a cup of tea is both relaxing and mellow . Which describes the kind of personality I have}.

  2. My name is Sara Jackson. I am currently in the field of Education. I work at Educare Central Maine as an Assistant Preschool teacher.
I chose an image of a quote to represent my interest in the field of Early Childhood Education. The quote reads; “So often you find that the students you’re trying to inspire, are the ones who end up inspiring you.” This quote adequately depicts my beliefs about the field of education. The children in my classroom have taught me so much about teaching and even about life.
I expect to gain a lot of information about language and literacy among young children and put this newly found knowledge into my work with children. I am looking forward to this class!

  3. Hello my name is Katlyn Champagne. I am a preschool teacher at Educare Central Maine in Waterville. I have been teaching now for almost 4 years and I love everything about it. The image that I chose to represent why I'm interested in Early Childhood, and also describes me is a Dr.Seuss quote. It goes like this “ The more that you READ the more things you will KNOW. The more that you LEARN the more places you’ll GO! - Dr. Seuss. I love exploring and figuring things out with the children. Everyday we learn new things and make new discovery's, thru books, play, activities, each other, thru everything we do and see.
I hope to take away new things that I can bring back to my classroom and my co-works to help us become better educators. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/34480753371300045/.

  4. Hi, my name is Jubilee Bailey. I have been working for Head Start for 15 years here in Franklin County. In the fall I will be working for Head Start in a public prek collaboration as a teacher/home visitor/ family advocate. I am taking this class because it is the last class I need for my 081 prek certificate. I am also looking forward to learning new ideas and approaches for the kids and families I serve. My image is a Fred Roger's quote "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But, for children, play IS serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood" I think that this is so true and is often forgotten and play is often under valued.

  5. Hello. This is the second time I am responding to this blog and I am aware that this post is slightly different that the first one. I was born and raised in Iran, the country of rich literacy and well know poets, where people are capable of communicating with poems if they were given chances. I am an assistant Pre-K teacher and I work for the Opportunity Alliance in Westbrook. I have two kids who speak Farsi and English and they understand Azeri. I work with the young children because I believe it is rewarding and I learn a lot from them. I love Farsi poetry and black tea.
My expectation from this course is to learn new techniques to attract children to the literature in a natural way that overcomes the other old techniques.

  6. Hello, my name is Meghan Hasson. I currently nanny for a family so that I can be with my 2.5 year old daughter everyday. My first job in highschool was at my friends mothers childcare center. I had such a positive experience, that since then I have always worked in the field of Early Childhood Education. I have an associates degree in ECE and I'm taking this course as I work towards my bachelors degree. The image that I chose to represent is also a quote "Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world." -Maria Montessori
I love being able to help support a child to their fullest potential and watching as they learn and grow with aid of others around them, as well as the positive rich environment they are in. I cannot wait to learn new things that I can use everyday with my daughter as well as the children I care for.

  7. My name is Ashley and I currently work at Heidi's House Childcare. My classroom currently has children between the ages of 12-18 months. I am really looking forward to this class on the topic of literacy and language development since my children are just starting to talk. Along with enjoying watching their language develop I also enjoy reading to them. I am excited to learn how to encourage language development and as a teacher what can I do to help their language development and literacy. One of my favorite things to do is to read to young children so I am excited. I found a quote that says "Learning is their journey. Let them navigate. Push them to explore. Watch them discover. Encourage their questions. Allow them to struggle. Support their thinking. Let them fly". This quote reminds me how I want to be as a early childhood educator. This is the link to the page with the quote on it!

  8. Hi, my name is Emily Johnson and I am currently working at Clover Preschool in Auburn which is an intergenerational program, and I love it (the preschool is in a nursing home). One of my stronger subjects through school and my favorites was/is literacy and language arts. I am looking forward to learning ways to bring it into my classroom. An image of the quote (is at the end) I feel has been a huge inspiration for me is "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!" Growing up I played softball and always liked this quote but as I got older I realized it has a whole different meaning, I now look at it as a way to view life and the opportunities and chances presented to me. I feel this could be a great model to present to the children, to always go for your dreams and never be afraid of failing just do it! 9. Hi, my name is Jessica and I am majoring in Early Childhood Education. This class will allow me to graduate with a dual certification of birth to 5 and K-3. I learned my passion for children and for teaching when I was still a child myself at day care. The object I chose is a sponge. The sponge represents one of the biggest reasons I want to teach young children. I have heard over and over that children are like sponges and it is true. They can absorb so much at such a young age. I feel blessed to be a part of children's lives in that way. I get to be one of the people who teaches them the building blocks for their future and that is an amazing opportunity and experience.

  10. Hello My name is Tammy Dwyer and I am a family child care provider from Auburn. I have owned and operated my child care now for over seventeen years. I first opened the child care after I got divorced and looked for child care so I could return to work. The child cares that I visited did not fit the picture that I had in my head of what they should be like. I had a different idea of what early education was about. Since that time we have been re-accredited four times by NAFCC. The picture I choose was that of my home/ business. Although it no longer looks like this since we have removed the overgrown shrubbery and changed the color of the vinyl siding. It is where I grew up as a child and developed my sense of what early education should be like and it is also where I provide care for children today.

  11. Hello, my name is Shelby Morin and I am a head start teacher in a double session classroom for Opportunity Alliance in Portland. Children have always been my passion and over the past couple years my love, care and knowledge for children has been expanding. I am very interested in Early language/ literacy because children's brains grow the most within the first three years of life and I am so fascinated by how quickly children pick up literacy skills. The picture I chose is a quote that says the more you read the more you learn, and in return the more places you will see and learn about. I love this saying because I love to travel myself and explore new places, here is the link for it http://www.pinterest.com/pin/287597126179201788/
