Talking Twins

Talking Twins -video
“Are these brothers having a conversation? Why or why not?”
"What does this video show about what these children already know about language?"

  1. I believe these young twins indeed are having a conversation. Despite their age and their lack of "words" I think this because they were taking turns talking, looking at each other and responding to one another. They were also making various facial expressions, hand gestures and eye contact which to me indicates signs of conversation.

  2. They are absolutely talking! They are following some rules like taking turns, eye contact and some mimicking. They are babbling with intonation. I felt like the one with his back to the camera was asking questions of his brother. And in return it felt like his brother was responding. It is a fantastic conversation that they are having!

  3. I believe the twins are certainly having a conversation with one another. They were babbling with each other as well as showing facial expressions and using hand gestures. I think that the twin that is back to is leading the conversation with the other twin being the one to answer the "questions."

  4. I too believe that the twins are engaged in a conversation. Their interaction features an essential feature of conversation - reciprocity. We see that when one twin speaks, the other one listens, and they also take turns to speak. Sometimes, one twin's speech elicits a physical response from the other. The twins also maintain eye-contact throughout their interaction, which is another element of conversation. Body language and gestures are also a conversational element, and the twins certainly make full use of their bodies and gestures in their interaction.

  5. In the short video, “Talking Twins”, two toddler-aged twins are filmed. These twins are having a conversation. Although it is not, what most believe to be, a standard conversation, the toddlers are demonstrating clear signs of communication. Communication can simply be defined as connection between people. The two young children are making eye contact, using hand gestures, and verbalizing; all clear signs of communication.

  6. I believe the twins are having a conversation. I agree with Jubilee when she says " I felt like the one with his back to the camera was asking questions of his brother." I felt this way too because every time he ended babbling his voice would rise just like when we ask questions. They had eye contact while talking and used body gestures along with some pretty interesting facial features. These two brothers were clearly communicating with each other.

  7. The two kidos in the Talking Twins video were having a deep conversation and they both were so engaged. It sounded like they were copying each other in making D sound. When one was making sounds, the other one was listening and they were following some social communication rules in that young age. I believe the twins know about body language, tone of voice and the level of voice in a conversation as it was obvious in the video. I watched this video with my 9 and 7 year old children who believed that the twins were using a secret language.

  8. The two twin brothers were definitely having a conversation. I read somewhere from the Machado book either on chapter 1, or chapter 2 that stated" a child's ability to communicate involves an integration of body parts"(Machado). And we saw that there conversation did involved multiple repetitive body movements. The video shows that the children know that some rules about having a conversation requires turn taking listening to one another, and eye contacts which was exactly what the boys demonstrated.

  9. Just like everyone else I would say that these two twin brothers were definitely having a conversation. They were taking turns and going back and forth. They have already picked up gesturing, taking turns, responding, and eye contact. It is really interesting to see how they have already learned by observing. The children in the my classroom do the same thing and I love to watch the interaction.

  10. Yes! They are communicating as they take turns making different sounds, babbling and maintaining eye contact. They are gesturing something it looks like they have seen a lot of gesturing;) I was wondering if someone in the family had done something to their foot and that was why the babies kept lifting his foot or if that was just something the babies had done and added to their conversation. They were adorable to watch:)

  11. I would say that the twin boys are definitely having a conversation. There is a give and take from one to the other and their attention is focused on each other. Both of them were gesturing to something as they "spoke" which adds to the impression that they really are communicating something to each other and having a conversation in their own language.

  12. I have to say that the twin boys are having a conversation for sure. They are taking turns talking, looking at each other, and are focused on the other. They even gestured to something. They are engaged in what they are "talking" about and that is all they are focused on. They may not have the "words" needed but they sure can communicate.

  13. I do believe that the children in this video where talking! I think they are communicating thru hand motions, laughter, babbling, body language. Twins are great, they have this bond that no one else will have with them. I have two sets of twins in my class room this year and they are so fun to watch how they react if one twin gets hurt, or if one twin goes to play some where else. They always know where each other is and how to cheer them up if they get hurt. I do think that not only tins can do this thought. Young children take in all the things like body language, laughing, hand motions, and babbling and copy it or try and get a reaction form the other one. They are always thinking and processing about new things and communication is mostly always at the middle of it all. The children in this video did a lot of copying and when one laughed the other would start in and move there arms and wiggle around. It was a great video to make you laugh to.

  14. I also do believe that the twins in this video are having a conversation amongst themselves. They are communicating through their babbling back and forth, through their hand motions, laughter, and body language. I have always read about Twins having their own "language" and way of communicating with each other; but have not seen it until recently when I watching my friends twin girls who are 13 months. They were so very funny with each other. These two girls were always mimicking each other and when one left the room the other twin would look for her sister until she found her. Once they each knew where each other were they were fine to go about their own business and play with toys. Twins have a lot of empathy towards each other but I think that all children have this feeling and skill within themselves; but it is not just twins that are capable of doing this. I believe that all children are capable of having these relationships with other children. Young children are constantly growing, learning and taking in new skills. That's what I love about working in education. They constantly are trying out and processing new things. I love watching children play and explore through their environment. It is like watching light bulbs go off in their brains when they learn new things. It's the best feeling watching children learn new things and how they communicate with each other. I loved watching these twins interact with one another!
